A. GCMS stands for Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. This type
of analysis produces data showing a breakdown of all compounds found
and then looks at the molecular weight of the compound. A comparison
with the known molecular weight of each substance then provides
a definitive result. From this result we can see the exact drug
or its metabolites and the levels at which these are present. GCMS
testing ensures that the result is legally defensible.
Q. What is the purpose of cut-off levels?
A. Cut-off levels are used within the laboratory testing to enable
an accurate determination of the probable presence of a drug: ‘positive’
results, or alternatively the indication that no drug was likely
to be present: ‘negative’ result. These levels are set
in accordance with manufacturer’s and statutory guidelines
(where applicable).
